VFW Post 9582 was founded in 1974 and named to honor David L. Sabec, a 1964 Vandalia-Butler High School graduate, who joined the Marine Corps in 1965. He completed his boot camp and was assigned to serve his Country by going to Vietnam in 1966. He gave his life serving his country after having been in Vietnam only three weeks.
On March 23, 1974, in the second floor Meeting Hall of Vandalia's Ford Dealership, 'Beau Townsend', VFW Post 9582 was established. The Post's first Commander was Cecil Clark, who is still an active member of the Post. In 1980, ground was broken to build our current home which is located at 4170 Old Springfield Road, here in Vandalia. Our membership has approximately 450 Post members (Veterans), 220 Ladies Auxiliary members, and 115 Men's Auxiliary members. VFW Post 9582 meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 7:30pm.
